Close Encounters of the Third Kind Tribute Art Car Design

Menu:   Main   Progress   Build/Cost List

1)      Cover car with sand sun shade cloth rising to roof 36” tied down with bungy cords. Tower built from spray foam and removeable from custom fit to roof of car with sun roof open. hole rise 20” above roof. Decorate like model railway scene aka diorama using their techniques to construct. Between carving and heat gun to slightly melt foam to create roughness. Paint with multiple sand colored spray paint of textured flexspray or use glue and sand to texture.  Use thin Styrofoam insulation to cut square pieces to mount vertically for contours of Devil’s Tower (see How to Carve White Foam Panels to look like Stone ).  Use green scrubbies to make forest/landscaping. Entire tower could fit in the back of a pickup with the landscaping cloth folded up/covering top opening.

Car itself would be LED lighted from below and replace headlights with powerful LEDs (optionally movable with servos). High power LEDs also behide wheels casting shadows/light as car moves. Tailights would be made into jet/rocket looking add ons. LEDs also under front grill to do the famous music sequence. Hood removed to allow injected fog juice (glycerin/water) on hot exhaust to escape. Truck panel removed to allow sub and speakers to blast thru. LEDs all synced to music. Copper tubing wrapped around exhaust to heat fog jog to eject out top of tower. Need to see is this is possible. 4/21: New design idea today coming in to work for tail light "rocket/jet engine". Picture a 3" diameter PVC with rings of red LEDs around it across its lenght each ring addressable by computer so as to make movement horizontally to simulate the jet/rocket action. Covering and difussing these LED and PVC tube would be another translucent tube over it allowing the light to shine thru disfussed like and very SciFi.

2)      Build 24” diameter Mother ship made from plastic umbrellas that have been fiberglassed and then cut down. The umbrellas have built it spokes for support and have the basic cone shape required. Remove umbrella's shade which is often too tight showing the ribs. Use a combination of wire and EL lighting of red and blue to join umbrella ribs and hold up fleece/fiberglass matting. The fiberglass should only be a couple of layers in order to be transluscent to allow light out and keep the weight down. The outer layer of fiberglass matting when partly dry can be embossed or stamped with molds made from hard drive cases or computer mother board circuity. Also drill small holes in the shaceship to also let light out. The whole model should almost glow as well as have lights shinning from it. Optionally, get LED lenses, which look like the end of a flashlight, and put around craft some with smaller 3W-5W LEDs to light up, others just allow light out in a focused beam.  1 RGB strip 2M individually programmable around bottom section to do the famous tones.  Above this another RGB strip somehow more focused out and up that can be controlled overall for color. String the inside with RGB LED strips in the vertical position across from one side to the other. Estimate 30" each strip from side to side of 24" circle of bottom section. Each section computer controlled via PWM (dimmer) to allow chasing lights side to side and RGB color chasing up and down. PWM would allow an allways on level of color and a very bright beat to the music or for famous sequence.

Rounded Rectangular Callout: Holes to allow internal light to shine thru translucent fiberglass cone shaped bodyRounded Rectangular Callout: EL lights of red/blue in grid pattern.Rounded Rectangular Callout: Addressable RGB Strip 1M long, 12” diameter

Rounded Rectangular Callout: 12” hole in bottom with high power 100W cool white or red. With optics to allow a focused beam.

Spaceship held up by PVC pipe inside another pipe with handle on outter pipe to raise/lower with holes in middle pipe to hold position.  Optional have opening at bottom/front/side that would come down with lights inside and mini aliens walking down steps.

Rounded Rectangular Callout: Drinking Straws some w/ fiber optic out.                Rounded Rectangular Callout: Texture lower part when still wet with HD cases to form pattern with grooves for ELRounded Rectangular Callout: RGB Strip color changing under pointing upRounded Rectangular Callout: Solid wood dowels and lit acrylic rods.

Rounded Rectangular Callout: Umbrellas covered in fiberglass some cut down to make sections on top. Poke holes to allow light, optionally optics.Another mothership model (CAD drawing):

Rounded Rectangular Callout: Texture still wet fiberglass to make relief using old circuit boards to make features.Rounded Rectangular Callout: Dowel rods, empty pill bottles. Add cranes made from HD arms. Use misc HD /computer parts.
